Octopus, called Tako in Japanese, is one of the delicious and affordable sushi toppings. Despite of its appearance, octopus is so tasty that the old proverb said “Octopus in season is too good to offer to your parents”. If you haven’t even tried it, it’s not as bad as you might think.
1. Season and Area of Production
Common octopus comes into season in June and July. Hokkaido, Hyogo, Kagawa, Iwate and Aomori prefectures are famous for the large landing of common octopus.
2. Savory and Appetizing Octopus as Sushi Neta
The juiciness and bland taste of octopus are excellent for sushi. It has nice texture, not too hard and not too soft, and delicate yet rich flavor. When chewing it, you can feel the sweetness and savory taste gradually coming out of the firm textured flesh and this is why octopus is such a popular sushi topping. In addition to being low in calorie, Octopus contains a lot of taurine, a nutrient which is effective in recovery from physical fatigue.
3. Other Ways to Enjoy Octopus
Octopus is widely used for making dishes such as sashimi, marinated octopus, tako-yaki (ball-shaped snack with octopus), shabu-shabu, stewed octopus.
